Chapter 31-35 Summary

Penn and his family attend the funeral service for Ruby Flowers. The reverend speaks about Ruby's life, and mentions Penn's attempt to find the truth about Del Payton's murder. Shad Johnson speaks, urging Penn to stop the search until after the election, prompting Althea Payton to speak, reminding those present that Johnson had done nothing to help them, just made promises like everyone else.

In chapter 32, Penn drives alone, feeling ashamed. Althea had told the congregation he was unselfish in his pursuit of the truth, but he was really seeking revenge. Continuing to drive, Penn winds up at Ray Presley's trailer with Dan Kelly close behind him. Presley goads Penn, telling him that he had not killed Payton, and that Penn had no idea about the truth. Presley stays faithful to Leo Marston the entire time.
