Summary

The narration returns to the future where Lilliet has tracked down her fourth potential betrayer; the Comtesse de Castiglione. Lilliet tries to give her the book, but is turned away by Comtesse’s maid and warned by the secret police to leave or they will have her arrested. Lilliet is surprised the Comtesse is so well protected, and begins the story of how they met.

At the age of 17, Lilliet (still under the name Sidonie) was sent from the convent to work for the Empress. She was responsible for the queen’s furs and tasks that her ladies-in-waiting did not want to do. Here is the narrator's first hint that the empress was exiled from Paris sometime in the future.
