Summary

In Chapter 7, Heather has a random thought as they arrive in Claude's basement: “You can't live in the dark and feel good about yourself” (48). She is not sure where she heard it. It is cool in the tunnels. Brenda has her brother Jerry's army shirt, and she gives it to Heather. One end of the tunnels is considered “spooky” because they are not used. Heather and the others sometimes encounter people in the tunnels. They had found a vagrant once near the “spooky end.” There are no entrances other than basement doors because the factory door was sealed a long time ago. No one knew how the stranger got into the tunnels. Sheriff Nillson took the man out through his own house.

In Chapter 8, Heather chases after Junie and Claude. She knows Maureen is out, probably with Ricky. Heather is annoyed and jealous...
