Summary

In Chapter 21, Jacob goes to Rutland, Vermont, where Evan Parker grew up. He stops at a bar that Evan owned until he died. Jacob talks to the people in the bar and asks them about Evan. Evan had a sister and two parents. The parents were killed by a carbon monoxide leak years ago, and some years after that, Evan’s sister died. Evan’s only remaining relative was his niece—the daughter of his sister. The book then includes another excerpt from Crib: Samantha continues to raise Maria on her own, as Maria ages through her youth and into her teen years.

In Chapter 22, Jacob drives to the home where Evan Parker grew up. The home is now occupied by two women—a married couple unrelated to Evan. Jacob briefly talks to the women about Evan, who are able to offer little new...
