Summary

Chapter 19 takes place a few days later, March 26, 1909; New York, New York. Belle is meeting Bernard at his hotel room though she knows this is a risk for herself, her career, and her family. Pierpont hates Bernard and Belle knows he would be furious if he discovered she is seeing him. Over a meal, Belle realizes Bernard is seducing her. At 29 years old, she experiences her first kiss. Belle tells him she wants to allow herself to go farther, but fears what will happen to her heart. She says she needs to be sure he does not consider her just another “dalliance.” He agrees to prove his devotion.

Chapter 20 takes place April-August, 1909; New York, New York. Belle discovers she is dissatisfied with her life as a whole. She considers her time with Bernard as an “authentic connection” and wants more. She and Bernard...
