Summary

Chapter 15 takes place seven months later, December 2-9, 1908; London, England. Belle chose Genevieve to accompany her as chaperon as Belle gathers items Pierpont purchased during his recent trip to England and acquires some others. Genevieve worries that Belle is bringing too much attention to herself. Belle repeatedly explains she will never blend in because all her peers are males, and that the bright, fashionable dresses are perfect “Because no one can imagine that a colored girl would be so brazen” (119). They talk about books. Genevieve cannot understand the importance though Belle knows that adding some of the Caxton manuscripts will make the library stand out. Belle feels that no one is paying attention to her skin color here as they do in America and feels more accepted among the art dealers and collectors. She wonders if it is because slavery has been outlawed...
