Summary

The novel is divided up into chapters that are titled with the date and either the name of a person or a place. The first chapter takes place on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 5:53 a.m. and is titled “The Chief.” Ed Kapenash, the Chief of Police in Nantucket, gets a call informing him that a 29-year-old woman named Merritt Monaco has been found, drowned, in the water. The bride of a wedding being thrown at the rich and glamorous compound, Summerland, had found Merritt, her maid-of-honor, moments before the wedding planner arrived and called the police. The Chief realizes that the wedding was the same wedding that his niece, Chloe, had been working at the night before.
