Summary

In Prologue: Ben, Ben Daniels is working on a story that he believes is going to make him a famous journalist. He knows he needs to leave soon because he has discovered a secret about the place where he is living. He calls Jess Hadley, his sister, who has decided to visit unexpectedly. As he is on the phone, someone uses a key to enter his apartment.

In “Jess,” which is narrated by Jess and set three hours later, Jess is frustrated because she is unable to get Ben to answer his phone. He promised he would be in his apartment to let her in, but he is not. Jess uses the brass knocker on the gate, hoping to draw someone’s attention. A light turns on in an upstairs window and Jess sees someone watching her.
