Summary

Chapter 29 is set six weeks before the day Elle and Jonas have sex. It is June 1 in the Back Woods. Elle goes out for a jog. As she nears the sea, she is surprised to see Jonas sitting on the shoulder of the road. Elle notices he hesitates for a moment when she asks how Gina is.

The next section is four weeks prior on July 4. Elle and Jonas and their families are at the Fourth of July parade. Gina becomes angry with Jonas and Elle when they laugh about something that happened when they were children. Elle is surprised because she believed Gina had put her jealousy behind her. Elle thinks something happened that must have brought Gina’s resentment back to the surface.
