Guatemala

Guatemala is the setting where the story begins and Jaime's cousin Miguel is killed, spurring Jaime's journey to the United States to escape the Alphas gang. Jaime is worried that he will never return to his home village, but he understands his parent's need to ensure his safety by sending him away.

Mexico

Mexico is the setting where Jaime and Ángela make their first forays out of Guatemala on their journey to the United States. They travel across the border in a packed smuggler's truck, hiding beneath burlap sacks.

United States

The United States is the idealized version of the homeland all of the characters are imagining as their salvation. Although the characters do not overly romanticize the reality of living in the United States, it is impossible for them to fully comprehend the challenges they will face.
