Summary

Reverend Devlin talks to Thomas Balfour after Lauderback leaves. He has heard their conversation. He is to be the new chaplain at the jailhouse. Devlin was listening because the name Crosbie Wells caught his attention. Reverend Devlin had arrived in Hokitika two days before the death of Crosbie Wells. He was ministering to the inmates when Anna Wetherell was brought in after being arrested. She was promptly propped against a wall and shankled. The next morning Devlin was requested to go to the Arahura Valley to assist in the collection of Crosbie Wells’ body. While at Crosbie’s cottage, Devlin finds a deed slightly charred in the stove that gives two thousand pounds to Anna Wetherell by Emery Staines and is signed by Crosbie Wells. Devlin conceals the deed.
