Birnam Wood: A Novel Overview

Eleanor Catton’s Birnam Wood, an eco-thriller fused with political satire, is a character-driven novel that follows the members of a guerilla gardening group, Birnam Wood, as they navigate working with American billionaire, Robert Lemoine. After Lemoine makes a large donation to Birnam Wood to help conceal his illegal mining operation in Korowai National Park, Tony Gallo tries to expose him while Mira Bunting takes cautious advantage of Lemoine’s generosity. The novel is set in New Zealand where Eleanor Catton was raised. Told from a third-person omniscient perspective, the story tackles themes such as privacy, idealism, climate change, identity, and capitalism.
