Summary

Part Three: Ruth and Margaret (1952 - 53) starts with Chapter 25 as Margaret is upset over the fact that William is still crying and is not as easy to manage as her other two kids were. However, Frank is supportive and tells Margaret to have faith, not in God, but in the future, they are going to have. Inside, Margaret feels that nobody is noticing her life falling apart, but hopes for a good rest. However, she wakes up in a panic at three in the morning, wondering how she can protect such a fragile child and thinking that she is a terrible mother. The next time she wakes up, she thinks William is not breathing but cries when she realizes she woke him up unnecessarily. She briefly wonders if death would be better than these endless trials of motherhood.
