Summary

The prologue (1952) opens with Margaret, a mother struggling after the birth of her child in 1952. She is envious of other mothers and terrified that her husband is now ashamed of her body like she is. She convinces herself that this is a new chapter in her life but is constantly distracted and exhausted. She is called to give a presentation in front of the neighborhood women, but Margaret feels she has become the odd one out. Still, she gains more confidence as she explains the miracles of Tupperware until her Jell-O presentation goes awry. This leads to her clothes tearing, the food getting all over herself, and Margaret bursting into tears as she flees the room. ashamed.
