Summary

In Chapter 14, Faraday drank himself to sleep that night but then decided in the morning to try to talk sense into Caroline. Caroline, however, told Faraday to stop coming to the house. She made him take his ring back. Faraday visited the Ayer’s family lawyer, Harold Hepton, and begged him to try to stop Caroline from selling the house but it did him no good. Hepton said that he understood Caroline’s reasons for wanting to get away from the house. Faraday agreed when Anne offered to talk to Caroline on his behalf but she was not successful in changing Caroline’s mind either. She said Caroline was packing up and preparing to leave the house.
