Summary

In Chapter 7, Faraday learned that after he left Hundreds Hall, Caroline had gone to check on Roderick and found him passed out drunk in his chair. She managed to get him into bed. After sleeping a couple of hours, Caroline heard glass breaking in Roderick’s room. She looked out the window, saw firelight and smelled smoke, and realized the house was on fire. She thought at first it would be a relief if the house were to burn down but then remembered her brother.

Caroline, Mrs. Ayers, and Betty put out the fires using wet blankets. Roderick was still in bed and appeared to be in shock to discover his room on fire. He had no idea what had started the blaze. They took him to the kitchen where he began to talk and act like a madman. Caroline finally slapped him...
