Fiona Skinner

Fiona Skinner is the main character of the novel, in addition to the first-person narrator for many of the novel's chapters. She is the youngest of the four Skinner siblings: aside from the death of her father, Fiona remembers her childhood fondly, as all three of her older siblings carefully protected her. Fiona moves through much of her adult life with a deep ambivalence: she works for virtually her entire career at an environmental nonprofit in New York City despite not being particularly impassioned about the work.
