Summary

Chapter 16 takes place four years after the death of Joe. Renee and Jonathan return to New York City on a permanent basis after their international humanitarian work. Renee develops a bond in her hospital with a cystic fibrosis patient named Melanie. Melanie passes away and, seven months later, her husband, Carl, returns to the hospital and tells Renee that he wants to donate Melanie’s frozen eggs to her. Some time later, Caroline reunites with her two sisters, the three of them getting lunch in New York City. They unite for another lunch in Hamden, and plant a tree in Caroline’s house in memory of Joe.
