Summary

In Chapter 20, “The Widow's Spite,” Severn arrives. Kathryn is filled with fury. Severn responds by saying that Eyric chose to jump to his death rather than face the falls. Severn uses his magic on Kathryn, trying to convince her to care for him. She spits on him, but then wavers in the face of the unrelenting wave of magic. Though Owen can tell Severn is using up his well of magic, Kathryn's “will melted before such power” (181). By the time Eyric and Dunsdworth are put into the river, Kathryn is wearing Severn's ring and rests her head on his chest. Etayne slips away with Drew. Owen pledges that he will stop Severn before he and Kathryn can marry.
