Summary

The next chapter is titled “The Ogre and the Sword.” Nannerl and Hyacinth arrive in the Kingdom of Back. The tiny, lighted faeries rush around him but Hyacinth shoos them away because of Nannerl's presence. She is thrilled with his attention but the tiny faeries pull her hair. Hyacinth says she must be firm with them to make them behave. Hyacinth takes her to a place where the fishhooks of “starfishers” pull them up into the sky. He says they will not harm Nannerl or their princeling, but Nannerl notices that he often ducks when the stars come near. Hyacinth says this kingdom is a mirror of Nannerl's world.
