Chapters 18-19 Summary

In chapter 18, Thomas waits, lying flat on his tummy in the darkness. Thomas knows his father and Mayhew are somewhere nearby, also waiting in a specific position to hide the glowing makeup they all wear. They are waiting for the Darrow brothers to arrive outside Mr. Pluto's cave, but it seems they have waited for hours and hours. Finally Thomas hears the noise of the Darrow brothers approaching. They wait until the Darrows are in the clearing. Mr. Pluto confronts them, yelling at them with his blanket attached in such a way that it looks like he has wings. Pesty appears at the edge of the clearing on horseback, appearing to be a flying horse. Thomas, his father, and Mayhew step out of the woods, dressed to resemble Dies Drear and the two dead slaves.
