Chapters 8-9 Summary

In chapter 8, Thomas is given his first cup of coffee as he watches his father puzzle something out about Mr. Pluto. Thomas goes up to bed soon after, but he dislikes his room because of a heavy chair Mr. Pluto sat in front of the fireplace. Thomas finds it intrusive and creepy. Thomas also wants to keep watch for ghosts, so he decides to sleep in the parlor. As soon as his parents are quiet in their room, Thomas checks on the twins and then goes into the parlor where he quickly falls into a deep sleep. While the Small family sleeps, someone comes in through the mirror in the hall and places something in the door frame of each room where a family member sleeps.
