Summary

Chapter 25 picks up after the comic-book hearing, on Wednesday, April 21. Charlie and Street meet at a a tavern in New York where Charlie knows a Black man talking with a White man will not prompt attention. Street announces he has good news but Carlin's “right-hand man” interrupts. Abner Lance tells Charlie the reporters have already been instructed to ignore Charlie's statements at the comic-book hearing and accuses Charlie of stealing the “dossier of classified information” (267). Lance says he has some photographs of a night when Charlie “recklessly and drunkenly” wrecked, killing a young woman. Street interrupts, saying he has some interesting photos of his own. Lance snatches them up. Charlie tries to seem unconcerned, as if he knows about these photos. Lance asks Street if he has thought about “what this might mean.” Street says the photos are proof that the wreck was...
