Chapter 3, South Africa Summary and Analysis

Leaving Holland, Xaviera moves to Johannesburg, South Africa to live with her stepsister Mona, her father's daughter from his previous marriage to a Russian ballerina, and her husband Dan. On the flight to Johannesburg Xaviera spends hours talking to and eventually having sexual relations with the Italian businessman seated next to her. Mona, Dan and a girl named Deenie meet Xaviera at the airport. Deenie and Xaviera had corresponded through Sylvia, half of the heterosexual married couple Xaviera had experimented with in Holland. She and Xaviera exchange numbers, planning to meet later.

Xaviera settles in with Mona and Dan, where she lives a life of luxury and eventually boredom. She becomes sexually restless, as she had become used to regular sex in Holland but knows no one in South Africa. She mentions that Mona and Dan's seven...
