Summary

The next morning, Ani hides her hair and heads to breakfast. Although she is not used to the smell of workers, she forces herself to eat. She learns that the goose boy she is working with is named Conrad. She is asked what part of the forest she is from, but she lets the other workers answer for her. After eating, she follows Conrad to the goose pen. He tells her to let him do the work as the geese are vicious. Ani, who has never seen a goose before, accidentally gets bitten by one before they start heading to the pasture. When Ani tells Conrad that they are three geese short, he gets angry and tells her she cannot do any better herding 50 geese than him.
