Summary

In Chapter 19, it is Friday, July 27 in the present day at Rothesay Estate on Orcas Island. Inara is down on the beach where she is planning to put a dock and kayaks for guests. Daniel comes down to see her. Daniel reveals he knows what happened to Joseph, that there was an accident in which the steamer Teaser capsized, and all passengers – Joseph listed among them – were considered presumed dead. This would mean that Mei Lien and her son would have been living alone, unsupported, they realize. Inara feels bad that Daniel is continuing to research the sleeve when Inara herself knows so much about it already, and wonders how she will ever tell him her family’s secret.
