Summary

In Chapter 19, we see a broken version of Dr. Anderson in his motel room, as he throws back a bottle of vodka from the mini-fridge and loses himself in his own memories again, specifically recalling the case of Preeta Kapoor, a young girl who was meant to be, “one of his strongest cases” (185). Preeta's parents told Dr. Anderson that she cried in the evenings, asking for her daughter and asking to return to the village of Uttar Pradesh. Together, they visited the village, and learned news that the daughter Preeta spoke of died years earlier. Preeta took the news somberly, and revealed to Dr. Anderson that she was once married.
