Nantucket, Massachusetts

The entirety of the novel takes place during one weekend in Nantucket. Hollis grew up in Nantucket; its locals helped raise her when her mother died. Nantucket’s population can be divided into two: locals and summer people. Hollis becomes a summer person once she marries Matthew, meaning she has the money to enjoy the luxurious side of the island. Nantucket locals are gossipy and exclusive.

Squam Road, Nantucket

Hollis’ house is located in Squam, situated far enough from town for privacy. Matthew builds her a bridge in the garden, inspired by Monet’s garden in Giverny. At the end of the novel, Hollis decides to live in the Squam house full-time.
