Chapter 52

Rand is preparing to leave for Caemlyn the next morning when Moiraine arrives, handing him two sealed letters. Both are from her. One is to Rand, the other to Thom Merrilin. Moiraine tells Rand that they must make a detour to the docks of Cairhein.

At the docks, Lanfear pays a visit to Kadere in his wagon, which explodes as Rand's party arrives. Lanfear steps out, livid with the knowledge she learned from Kadere, that Rand had slept with Aviendha. Moiraine attempts to stand down Lanfear, but is flung aside. Lanfear lashes out at Egwene and Aviendha, but Rand protects them. Lanfear is channeling through a sa'angreal bracelet on her wrist, and it is all Rand can do to protect Egwene and Aviendha. Lanfear, in her rage, falters, but Rand finds himself unable to kill her, though he does refute...
