Summary

In Chapter 13, Moore speaks to a therapist about how she is thinking of going back to Liberia. Her therapist questions her about her time in that country but Moore is reluctant to acknowledge that she could have experience trauma as a child in Liberia, stating time and again that she was lucky and her family was privileged. Moore proceeds to reflect on her time in Texas after leaving Liberia. She recounts how she and her sisters had to adjust to American society, where they were viewed as ‘other’ because of the color of their skin and sat with the black girls in school simply because they looked like them. Moore then recounts the time her and her black friends were chased out of a convenience store by a racist white store-owner who used racial slurs towards them, stating that the event traumatized her...
