Summary

The Prologue opens with Ruby Daly recounting a dream that she had during her second week at Thurmond, a prison camp where children with abilities are held. In the dream and in her life, Ruby cannot be certain she has a real identity. In the dream, Ruby is old, but them time reverses and she becomes young. The dream indicated her desire to go back and reclaim “the things I'd lost and the person I used to be” (2), but Ruby no longer wants that.

Chapter 1 opens with Ruby holding onto a man's throat while she reads his mind. She is able to control his actions as well. This is her third mission under the direction of a leader named Rob.
