Summary

Chapter 4

The next morning Alfred goes to church with Aunt Pearl and her daughters. He has hardly slept, replaying the time he’d spent in Donatelli’s Gym over in his mind all night. As they walk to church, they pass a 'nationalist’ rally at which a speaker is telling the small crowd that the white man has his foot on the black man’s throat. Alfred hurries past the rally, but he is soon stopped by a young man from the neighborhood named Harold and his girlfriend Lynn. They tell him that they are organizing a march for their rights and ask him to march with them. Alfred tells them that he is going to church and walks away quickly.
