Sunday's Convent

Sunday's Convent is the convent and orphanage located in County Cork, Ireland. After Nan discovers she is pregnant and seeks help from Finbarr and Finbarr's parents, his father delivers Nan to Sunday's Convent. He assures her that the nuns are devoted to the care of young women and their babies. However, the environment soon proves hostile and oppressive. It is specifically designed to sequester and punish young women who have gotten pregnant out of wedlock. During their stays, the women are forced into hard labor. After they give birth, they must give their babies up for adoption.

Only four months after her daughter's birth, Nan discovers that the nuns have given her to a new family without her consent. Desperate to be reunited with the baby, she flees Sunday's Corner.
