Summary

Chapter 8 marks the start of October. Susan’s upstairs neighbor, Kate, knocked on Susan’s door in the middle of the night. Her baby was terribly sick, and she had to go to the emergency room. She asked Susan to watch Ava, her two-year-old daughter. Susan reluctantly agreed and went upstairs. She cleaned the unkempt apartment and then tried to sleep, but Ava woke up. Susan decided to take her shopping, and was surprised at how difficult the girl was. Susan remembered how Edward has also been a very difficult child. He had been very sick one summer, and her mother had spent the whole three months in the hospital with him. Susan stayed home with her father, who had paused his alcoholic ways for a brief time to take care of her. Kate picked Ava back up and Susan went to work...
