Summary

In Chapter 14, set in July of 1915, Eve learned that details of the kaiser’s trip through Lille that would be taking place in two weeks. Eve tried to get another waitress to take the books upstairs to René that night so Eve could get home and record the details she had heard, but the other girl claimed to be too scared of René. Eve was offended by the woman’s fear and wondered why it mattered if she was scared since the chore was something that had to be done.

Eve did manage to get the head waiter to take the journals up but was stopped by a German officer on her way home because she was out after curfew. Eve was not able to produce her exemption papers, but luckily René saw what was happening and told the soldier that Eve...
