Summary

In Chapter III, “Lovers,” Katsuki Kurata was one of the only people who came to the café to travel to the future. Few people visited the future because the “prospects of meeting a particular person at the café at a specific time in the future” were uncertain (154). While sitting in the appointed seat on Christmas Day, Kurata observed the café patrons, including Kyoko, Miki, Nagare, and Kazu. He was particularly moved watching Miki write and string wishes on “the large Christmas tree” Miki’s late mother “Kei had left” (158). She wrote one wishing for Nagare’s happiness (160).

Nagare contacted Fumiko, Kurata’s colleague, on Kurata’s behalf. Fumiko had made a promise to bring Kurata’s former lover Asami Mori to the café on this date if the circumstances were correct. When Nagare called Fumiko, she revealed that she was married, which made Kurata...
