Sarah Gerard is the author of the essay collection. She is from Florida and writes about different experiences during her time there. She is married and is close with her family, having grown closer to her mother as an adult.

Sarah wants to understand, not only about her family and where she grew up, but also about other people she encounters in her home of Florida. Having been baptized in a Unitarian church, Sarah investigates more about her parents’ involvement with the church and how it shaped them as people. In doing so, she is able to see her parents as individuals exploring their own spiritual identities. By reading her mother’s journal, she not only learns about the history of the church, but also begins to see her mother as “more than a myth” (71).
