Chapter Eleven Summary

In Chapter 11, Swenson slowly recovers following her C section. The fetus is frozen for tests, and Marina notes the baby has a rare condition that causes the legs to fuse together. After several days, she and Swenson discuss whether Marina will stay on to take care of the Lakashi, and Marina at first refuses. Swenson, however, notes that she thinks often of Anders, and that Barbara's story of her father has led her to some conclusions. What Barbara saw, she notes, was a white man in the jungle who knew her name. Marina, in shock, realizes Anders may not be dead. Swenson explains that Anders wandered off during his fever, and Easter was to look out for him. One day, Easter lost him, and Swenson assumed he had wandered into the jungle and died.
