Chapters 17 to 20 Summary and Analysis

In Chapter 17, Campbell prepares for the feast and he would prefer to stay in and make love to Teresa. He needed the diversion. He could smell lilacs.

Teresa was expected to oversee the staff and insure that everything remains presentable so they can entertain and keep it presentable for business. Campbell compliments his wife, saying her hair looks grants. Teresa is in her mid-twenties and is younger by about 10 years. There was some issue with their marriage, but she became his wife six months prior.

She quizzed him when he proposed, asking if he was a man intending to go places because she wanted to rise up in the world. He assured her he was on his way up and his declaration that no other man she was seeing would compare to Campbell's future stature.
