Chapter 13 to 16 Summary and Analysis

In Chapter 13, Fitch hurries up and gathers the apple wood and takes it back. When it spills out, he thinks about leaving it until he sees Master Drummond nearby and quickly gathers it and puts it back on the cart. Fitch sees Beata and he tries to think of something to say that would not make him sound foolish. Beata notices his hand and asks what happened when she takes his hand in her's to inspect it and she removes his splinter. He looks at her neck and then forces himself to look away. He says he is meant to help with the load.

When inside, Judith tells him to get the list of everything the butcher sent and Beata calls off the cargo for him. Beata says that the Minister of Culture always wants sparrows for the feasts...
