Summary

Chapter 1 begins with an account of how Anita Moody, Jared’s grandmother, seems to hate him even though she loves the rest of her grandchildren. She apparently thinks he is “the damn Trickster” rather than a human (2). We learn that Jared and his family moved to a new place when he was 5. When they arrive, Jared plays tag with his mother’s friends’ children, and he tells one child to “go fuck [her]self,” leading to some discipline from his parents (6). They visit his father’s mother, Nana Sophia, who talks vulgarly about her husband. His parents leave for the night and Jared stays with Sophia.
