Summary

The action continues as focus shifts to the barn on the MacGregor Plantation. “A white indentured servant, Dustin,” brings in a bale of hay. As he pauses to take a break, “Nigger Gary” (40) comes in, dressed nicely and ordering Dustin back to work. When Dustin calls him sir, Gary laughs, wondering whether that is what all white “indentured servants” are told to do. Dustin says that Gary is in charge, and that he always calls the man in charge “sir” (41).

Gary tries to decide what he should call Dustin, a name that Gary says is “the only white thing” about him (42). Dustin comments that Gary is a pretty white name too, and Gary reminds him that he is called “Nigger Gary” (42). Dustin mocks him for his name, and Gary knocks over the bale of hay that Dustin had just brought in. Dustin...
