Chapters 9 and 10 Summary

Sloane convinces Tony to go with her the next morning to check the position pinpointed by Heinrick, having gotten permission to stay another day. The Captain scans the horizon and shows Sloane a freighter ahead, out of its natural area by four or five hundred miles. She notices no smoke from its funnel. Tony points out a boat coming from behind and Sloane's reaction makes Tony ask what's going on. She confesses the events of the previous evening and Tony is furious she hasn't told him sooner. Sloane heads for the freighter, hoping to reach help before the men behind catch up. She tries to radio the freighter to lower a ladder, but gets no answer.
