Point of View

Sisterland, by Curtis Sittenfeld, is a fictional story told from the first person perspective of the main character, Kate Tucker (previously Daisy Schramm). Though the narrative is reliable and consistent with the main character, the story is told in multiple timelines, switching between the past and current time periods.

When the story opens, Kate describes her life in a current timeline. She is married to a university professor and has two young children. The first flashback she describes occurs in the third chapter, and contains information surrounding the births of her and her twin sister, Violet. In this flashback, Kate describes her mother's difficulties adjusting to parenthood, and discusses the first time that she and her sister's psychic abilities revealed themselves.

The following chapter reverts to the current time line again, but the pattern of alternating time from present to past continues for the remainder...
