Chapters 1 through 14 Summary

In chapter one, Grace remembers the day she is attacked by wolves. They are "licking me, biting me, worrying at my body". She notes that she doesn't scream. She catches the eye of one and holds his gaze. She believes she'll die but doesn't. In chapter two, Sam remembers seeing the other members of the pack drag the girl off her tire swing in her back yard. He does nothing about it at first but then intervenes. In chapter three, Grace says that she sees the wolf after that, always in the winter, for the next six years. The wolf never comes too close to her but is always present.
