Summary

Part I is titled Woodstock: The Old Lodge. The Old Lodge is where the first seven chapters take place. Chapter 1 opens with Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont arriving at the lodge that belongs to Matthew's family in the small town of Woodstock, which is in Oxfordshire, England. They have time traveled from the 21st Century to 1590. Diana is a witch who can time travel, but she was concerned about her ability to bring them accurately to this place and time. Matthew is a vampire and they are at his family home. The first person they encounter is Christopher Marlowe, known as Kit. Matthew affectionately calls the daemon poet Kit. Diana is aware of his role in history, but Kit shows open contempt for Diana and is shocked when Matthew introduces Diana as his wife.
