Chapters 27-29 Summary

In Chapter 27, Rose is part of the team that hikes to the caves where Strigoi are thought to be hiding to rescue those taken from the academy. Rose waits outside as the more experienced guardians and Moroi teachers go inside. Rose can hear the fight, but can do nothing to help. Slowly captives begin to come out of the caves. Finally the fight becomes chaotic and Rose is sent inside to help. Rose joins a group that includes Dimitri and her mother. They fight their way out of the cave and are nearly safe when Dimitri is suddenly overcome by a Strigoi who was hiding along one cave wall. Rose is only able to watch as Dimitri is taken down. Rose tries to go back for Dimitri, but her mother forces her to run.
