Summary

Tom believes that he is going to die in the sinkpit. Suddenly, he hears the noise of an engine coming towards him. He feels himself being pulled from the sinkpit and finds himself, semi-conscious, lying on the sand, with a woman standing over him. The woman says something to him but he does not understand her. The woman is pregnant. She hauls Tom to his feet and helps him into her motor rig, all the while speaking to him in a language he cannot understand. She drives towards a nearby hut. She stops the rig and they get out. Tom finds his horse there, safe and well. He thanks the woman. They walk towards a nearby hut which, as they approach, Tom can see is called The Fogbell. They go inside and Tom discovers that it is a pub. He can hear music coming...
