Summary

Tom takes Edgar’s check to the post office to cash it, where he is served by Joan Wyeth, his friend Harry’s sister. Tom has a crush on Joan and finds it difficult to speak normally when he sees her. Joan is warm and friendly when she serves him but Tom wonders if she is the same with everyone. She is clearly surprised by the amount of the check. Joan asks Tom if he is going to the folk club later and says Harry has told her he is a good guitar player. Tom demurs, saying he’s not that good.
