Summary

The other migrants begin looking to Deeti for advice and she becomes the appointed matron of the group. One of the men asks Deeti if one of the female migrants, Heeru, would set up house with him once they reach Mareech. Deeti tells Heeru about the proposal and she accepts it. Deeti then begins to plan the wedding, which brings joy to everyone. But one woman, the midwife Sarju, has never recovered from her initial seasickness and tells Deeti she believes she is dying. Sarju gives Deeti a pouch with seeds of medicinal plants, including marijuana, datura and poppy.
